Kupopo makes no attempt to hide his sorrow.

— In-game description

Steps

Journal

  • Kupopo makes no attempt to hide his sorrow.
  • As Kupopo continues to struggle with the revelation that Beruru may have died, you are approached by the art trader you previously aided. Out of concern for the moogle's well-being, he suggests you travel to Ul'dah and speak with an information monger who will likely know for certain what became of his friend. Cautiously optimistic, Kupopo agrees to go to Ul'dah, provided he may travel by hempen sack as before.
  • Wymond has plenty to share regarding Beruru's disappearance. After selling her master's finest works, the pictomancer supposedly used her profits to purchase a tomb at Arrzaneth Ossuary. Shaken by the news, Kupopo hurriedly flies off towards Erralig's Burial Chamber.
  • Kupopo begs an Ossuary priest to allow him to examine Beruru's coffin, but as the moogle is not family, he is promptly refused. The priest lets slip that he has more pressing concerns to address─efforts to expand the burial chambers have unearthed both an unmapped ruin and a horde of belligerent zombies. Kupopo, as is his wont, offers your services to him, and you are tasked with slaying the zombies, who are presently writhing about the Sil'dih excavation site.
  • By your hand are the living corpses consigned to oblivion. Kupopo and the priest will wish to hear of your accomplishment, and can doubtless still be found at the entrance to the burial chamber.
  • The priest is relieved to know that the zombie situation has been resolved. Having also realized that Kupopo and Beruru were like family, he agrees to open the coffin for the moogle's benefit. Yet when the moment comes, you discover it contains not Beruru, but a single painting, which Kupopo identifies as Janquetilaque's last work. Unsure what to make of this latest development, the moogle bids you speak with him outside the burial chamber.
  • With renewed hope that Beruru may yet live, Kupopo believes another approach may be necessary to find her. As he will require some time before recommencing the search, the moogle urges you not to shirk your training and return once you have grown more confident in your skills.
    • ※The next pictomancer quest will be available from Kupopo upon reaching level 90.

Dialogue

Accepting the quest (cutscene)

Kupopo: ...Oh. It's you, kupo. What is it?
What will you say?
> I've been practicing my pictomancy.
> I wanted to see how you were faring.
< I've been practicing my pictomancy. >
Kupopo: I'm glad you're doing well, kupo. The gods know I'm not...
< I wanted to see how you were faring. >
Kupopo: That's very kind of you, kupo. Truth be told, I'm still struggling to come to terms...
Kupopo: If Beruru has truly left this world, it means that I...that I...
???: I wasn't too late! Thank goodness!
Kupopo: <sigh> If only, kupo... If only...
Kupopo: ...Oh, it's you, mister art dealer. What brings you back to us?
Aided Trader: I've concluded my business here and shall be returning to Ul'dah. But before I take ship, I wished to speak with you again.
Aided Trader: 'Tis plain your friend's fate weighs heavily on your mind. If you wish to know the truth for a certainty, I should be glad to introduce someone who deals in information.
Kupopo: You...you think this person would know what became of Beruru?
Aided Trader: Oh, yes. This man makes it his business to know everyone else's in Ul'dah. At the very least, he should be able to tell you if your friend yet lives.
Aided Trader: He also happens to owe me a favor. I shall personally ask him to assist you.
Aided Trader: Once you arrive in Ul'dah, head to Emerald Avenue and look for a bespectacled man with a self-satisfied grin. That will be him.
Aided Trader: Now then, it's time I boarded my vessel. Farewell, my friends, and best of luck in your search for the truth.
Kupopo: I want to know, Forename. Desperately. But at the same time, I'm so scared, kupo... If Beruru really is gone...
What will you say?
> You mustn't lose hope.
> We'll face the truth together.
Kupopo: Shining the light of hope for me, are you? You've grown so much as a pictomancer... Thank you. With you at my side, I feel I can press on and face whatever comes, kupo.
Kupopo: Right. Let's head to Ul'dah. We'll do it the same way as the journey here─you teleporting with me in a sack!
System: You are now carrying a Kupopo-sized sack. It would be prudent to handle your burden with the utmost care until such time as you reach Ul'dah.

Open the Kupopo-sized sack at the designated location (cutscene)

Kupopo: Whew, that was a lovely little nap... And just like that, we've arrived!
Kupopo: The towering cityscape, the dry desert air mingling with the scent of gil... There's no mistaking Ul'dah!
Kupopo: Now then, we should find the fellow who deals in information, kupo.
Kupopo: ...And I believe I have! That bespectacled man there, with a grin that does indeed bespeak unwavering confidence!
Wymond: Well, well, if it ain't the pair the art dealer called about.
Kupopo: You could tell who we are just like that!? You really do know things, kupo!
Wymond: Aye, well, that's true enough. But to be fair, I'd have to be blind as a bat to miss a moogle travelin' with the savior of the bleedin' realm an' then some. I understand you're lookin' for a friend?
Kupopo: Th-That's right! Her name is Beruru, and she was last seen in Ul'dah! If you know anything about what became of her, you must tell me, kupo!
Wymond: Don't get your pom in a twist. I'll oblige your burnin' curiosity.
Wymond: It was about half a year past that Beruru came to Ul'dah. She brought with her eight of Janquetilaque's paintings, which she put up for sale.
Wymond: She sold the lot within a matter of weeks, an' with the small fortune she made, she went an' bought herself “accommodations” at the Ossuary.
Kupopo: N-No, that can't be right...!
Wymond: 'Fraid it is, my furry friend. Now, it bears stressin' that bein' interred in the city is not an inexpensive proposition. Hardly surprisin', given the limited space what's left.
Wymond: But she made the donation to the Ossuary up front an' in full─an amount most folk'll never see in their lifetimes.
Kupopo: Wh-What did she do after that?
Wymond: That remains a mystery. Her room at the inn was found neat an' tidy. You wouldn't have known she'd been there if not for some personal belongings left behind.
Wymond: Among those, of greatest interest was a set of travelin' gear, a coinpurse containin' the payment for the room, an' a letter what said she wasn't comin' back.
Wymond: Findin' it all a bit odd, the innkeep called the Brass Blades to investigate, but the evidence led 'em to conclude that she was voluntarily missin', an' likely dead by her own hand.
Kupopo: Then Beruru really is gone...
Wymond: That's what they think, but who's to say, eh? There's only one way to be certain, I reckon.
Wymond: Accordin' to a priest who oversees burials, Beruru's coffin is stored in Erralig's Burial Chamber over by the Ossuary. You'll have to open it up and see what's there or isn't with your own eyes.
Kupopo: I-I'll go there at once, kupo!
Wymond: An' off he flies...
Wymond: You should go after him. Dependin' on what's waitin', he'll need support.

Optional Dialogue

Order of Nald'thal Priest: I'm sorry, but that is out of the question.

Speak with Kupopo

Kupopo: I beg you, kupo! It would only be a little peek!
Order of Nald'thal Priest: That does not make it any less an act of defilement! We cannot allow you to disturb the dead!
Kupopo: Forename, this priest says we can't check Beruru's coffin! Please explain the situation to him!
Order of Nald'thal Priest: So that is the way of it...
Order of Nald'thal Priest: While I am not unsympathetic to your plight, a coffin may only be opened in exceptional circumstances, and with the permission of family─which you are not.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: I'm sorry, but I must ask that you leave me in peace. I have my hands full with other pressing matters.
Kupopo: Oh? And what matters might those be, if I may ask?
Order of Nald'thal Priest: In order to address the shortage of burial space in the city, works have been underway to expand Erralig's Burial Chamber downwards.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Alas, the excavators inadvertently unleashed a horde of zombies from an unmapped ruin, and it's fallen to me to deal with them...
Kupopo: Oho! This sounds like another opportunity for Forename to put his/her pictomancy to work!
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Pictomancy? You mean the art created by the fabled Archon Relm, who roamed the land lending aid to those in need?
Kupopo: None other, kupo. The matter of the tomb can wait─let's tend to these zombies first.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Why, I should be most grateful! The zombies have taken to prowling the Sil'dih excavation site in central Thanalan. Please see that those tormented souls finally know rest.

Optional Dialogue

Kupopo: Those zombies will be no match for your brush strokes, kupo!
Order of Nald'thal Priest: You will not have difficulty locating the zombies at the Sil'dih excavation site. Grant them the peace they deserve, please.

Speak with the Order of Nald'thal priest at Erralig's Burial Chamber

Order of Nald'thal Priest: The zombies have been dealt with? Wonderful! You have my heartfelt thanks, good pictomancer.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: While you were away, I spoke further with Kupopo about his relationship with Mistress Beruru. I understand now that they were as family to one another.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: In light of this, and also in recognition of your service, I will allow you to examine her coffin. If you would follow me...

Cutscene

Order of Nald'thal Priest: This is the one. If you are ready, I shall open it.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Very well.
Kupopo: Please... Please don't let it be her...
Kupopo: ...What?
Kupopo: What is this, kupo!?
Order of Nald'thal Priest: A painting.
Kupopo: Yes, we can all see that! And I recognize it as well!
Kupopo: This is Janquetilaque's final work, The Ephemeral Palace!
Kupopo: Why was this painting in the casket? And if Beruru isn't here, then where could she possibly be?
Order of Nald'thal Priest: ...I'm afraid no one in the Order knows where she has gone.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Several moons ago, Mistress Beruru came to us unannounced...
Beruru: Pardon me! Is anyone there?
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Greetings, my child. Are you come to pay your respects?
Beruru: No, I...I was told I could purchase a tomb here.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: Ahem. Tombs are bestowed upon pious souls who make a donation, yes.
Beruru: Oh, I see... In that case, I wish to make a donation. My master's paintings fetched a high price, so I believe I have sufficient funds.
Beruru: Would it be possible to have the tomb prepared immediately?
Order of Nald'thal Priest: In that manner did she secure burial rights, and so we set about making the necessary arrangements.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: When all was in readiness, she requested a moment alone in the chamber, so I waited outside the entrance.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: When she did not emerge after a time, I went back in to check on her...only to find that she was gone.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: There was only this painting and a handwritten note instructing us to inter it.
Kupopo: Are you saying Beruru vanished into thin air!?
Order of Nald'thal Priest: So far as I could tell. As you can see, there is only one entrance to this chamber.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: I organized a large-scale search, thinking she might have wandered into the lower levels or even those under excavation. Yet still we found nothing.
Order of Nald'thal Priest: At length the search was called off. And without answers, what else could I do but fulfill her final wish? I placed the painting within the coffin, where it has remained ever since.
Kupopo: Curiouser and curiouser, kupo...
Order of Nald'thal Priest: That is everything I know─I am sorry I could not tell you more. Now, if you would excuse me, I must return to my duties...
Kupopo: Y-Yes, of course.
Kupopo: Come on, then, let's head back outside.

Speak with Kupopo

Kupopo: Interring Janquetilaque's painting and vanishing without a trace... I'm not sure what to make of Beruru's actions, kupo.
Kupopo: What about you, Forename? Do you have any thoughts?
What will you say?
> I think Beruru may still be alive.
> Janquetilaque's painting must be the key to this puzzle.
> I haven't the foggiest...
< I think Beruru may still be alive. >
Kupopo: I pray you're right, kupo. I was terrified that she would be in the casket, and relieved my worst fears didn't come to pass...but now I can't help but wonder...
< Janquetilaque's painting must be the key to this puzzle. >
Kupopo: I hope so, kupo. Because if the painting can't help us find answers, then I have no idea where we go from here.
< I haven't the foggiest... >
Kupopo: So you can't make sense of it either...
Kupopo: I suppose it's back to the search. I'm going to take some time to ponder things and see if I can't think of other leads to pursue.
Kupopo: Meanwhile, please continue to train. Think colorful thoughts, keep your brush arm supple, and come and find me when you feel your artist's aura has grown further, kupo!
