Walkthrough
This duty contains a solo instance in the Dreamlike Palace within the painting.
Stage 1
- Defeat the 3 Sons of the Kingdom and the Winged Steed in the starting room. The Winged Steed will use Burning Bright, a telegraphed line AoE in front of it.
- Proceed to the next room and defeat the 2 Birds of Prey and Flight of the Griffin. The Flight of the Griffin will use Swooping Frenzy, a large telegraphed circle AoE in front of it, followed by Frigid Pulse, a telegraphed donut AoE, and Fervid Pulse, two telegraphed line AoEs forming a plus shape. The Birds of Prey will use Feathercut, a telegraphed line AoE, and Eye of the Fierce, a telegraphed gaze attack.
- Proceed to the final room and a cutscene will play.
Stage 2: Janquetilaque's Portrait
- Flower Motif: Spawns an untargetable A Flower in the Sun (rafflesia) add near a corner, which will use a telegraphed 180 degree cleave (Bloody Caress) in front of it.
- Flood in Blue: A telegraphed line AoE through the room with arrows on each side, indicating untelegraphed follow-up line AoEs that will cascade in each direction.
- Blaze in Red: Unavoidable magical damage.
- Arbor Motif: Spawns an untargetable O'er the Ancient Arbor (leshy) add, which will use Nine Ivies, two sets of telegraphed alternating conal AoEs that will together cover the entire room. This is combined with Tornado in Green, a telegraphed donut AoE centered on the boss.
- Sculpture Cast: Telegraphed gaze attack. Look away.
- Mountain Motif: Spawns an untargetable The Hallowed Peak (phoebad) add, which will use Earthquake, a telegraphed point-blank AoE that will cascade outwards in two follow-up concentric donut AoEs. This is combined with Freeze in Cyan, a telegraphed frontal conal AoE from the boss.
- Flower Motif (Bloody Caress) will now be combined with Flood in Blue.
- Mechanics repeat until the boss is defeated.

Journal
- Kupopo heartily nods in your general direction.
- Kupopo's trip down memory lane has yielded little success in your absence. As he reflects once more on his falling-out with Beruru, however, an answer abruptly comes to him: Beruru has become part of the painting. Though what Kupopo means by this is unclear, he promises to explain everything soon. First, however, you must join him on a final journey, and to that end you must meet the moogle at the Jadeite Flood.
- At the Jadeite Flood, Kupopo tells you that Janquetilaque met his end protecting his fellow patients at the Warmwine Sanitorium, mere days before Kupopo and Beruru returned from their first adventure without him. Beruru was distraught, and in a moment of poor judgment, the moogle tried to encourage her by stating she could─and should─stand on her own two feet as a pictomancer. Beruru, however, responded with anger, leading to an argument which culminated in the two parting ways. Kupopo further explains that Beruru is an exceptionally gifted pictomancer that can imbue her creations with life─and alter the living as well. He now believes that, in a fit of grief, Beruru sealed herself within the painting─the last remnant of Janquetilaque's memory─and bids you enter the world of the painting to save her.
- You discover an elaborate dreamscape within the painting, and at its heart a captive Beruru. She lives, but is trapped within a prison of her own creation, with an illusion of Janquetilaque as her gaoler. Scoffing at Kupopo's declaration that he is no more a shade, he refuses to release her, and considers you, the inheritor of his soul crystal, to be a poor imitation incapable of defeating the master. It falls to you to strike him down and set Beruru free.
- With the illusion of Janquetilaque vanquished, Beruru comes to her senses and is finally reunited with Kupopo. The two must soon be parted, however, as Kupopo reveals his true nature: he has long guarded Beruru as her imaginary friend made manifest. The young pictomancer is reluctant to leave her fantasy behind, but you and the moogle persuade her to face the world once more. Kupopo bids his final farewell to you and Beruru as you return to the Jadeite Flood.
- Kupopo's aether has returned to Beruru, and with it, the memories of your time together with the moogle. Inspired by your selfless deeds, she thanks you for accompanying her dearest friend, and chooses to embark on a journey of her own, that she might aid others as you have aided her. In Kupopo's memory─and for the sake of others you may yet save─you vow to uphold the ways of the pictomancer and paint the world with hope.
Dialogue
Accepting the quest
Kupopo: Why, Forename! I can tell you've been applying yourself to your training. Kupopo: Oh yes, the enigmatic aura of an accomplished artist is unmistakable. I'm put in mind of Janquetilaque as he was in his prime, kupo! Kupopo: Now then, imagine a great big canvas that has yet to receive even a single drop of paint. That, unfortunately, is the state of my search for Beruru. I couldn't find any new clues as to her whereabouts, and I'm at a loss as to what to do next...
What will you say? > Perhaps we should consider what Beruru's objective might have been. > Why did you two have a falling-out in the first place? > I'm at a loss too, kupo!
< Perhaps we should consider what Beruru's objective might have been. > Kupopo: Beruru's objective... If we're to even guess, then I think I have no choice but to revisit the events of that fateful day.
< Why did you two have a falling-out in the first place? > Kupopo: <sigh> I was reluctant to disclose the events of that fateful day, but perhaps I should have...
< I'm at a loss too, kupo! > Kupopo: For someone possessed of such exceptional imagination, you can be quite clueless at times. But rest assured I don't think any less of you for it, kupo. At any rate, for want of a better idea...
Kupopo: Let us speak of the very root of our troubles. The argument that led to Beruru and I going our separate ways... Kupopo: On that day, the two of us returned to Limsa Lominsa after a journey─the first without Janquetilaque's company. Kupopo: Old age and long years on the road had taken their toll, and we had made the difficult decision to leave him in the care of a sanatorium. Kupopo: With a smile on his face as he lay abed, he had wished us well on our coming adventure, and reminded Beruru that she mustn't... Kupopo: <gasp> Could it be? Yes... Yes, it must! Kupopo: Beruru has become part of the painting! Kupopo: I don't blame you for being confused. I promise to make everything clear soon, kupo. Kupopo: Forename, you've been the best student I could've hoped for. You've trained diligently, aided those in need, and kept your promise to me. Kupopo: I can't rightly ask more of you, but for this thing I'm about to do, I'm afraid I must. I beg you, lend me your strength one last time, kupo! Kupopo: Come and meet me at the Jadeite Flood. I'll be waiting!
Speak with Kupopo by the Jadeite Flood (cutscene)
Kupopo: There you are, Forename! Kupopo: I know you must have many questions. Allow me to explain everything, kupo. Kupopo: It took a few “pretty pleases,” but I convinced the Ossuary priest to let us borrow the painting. Kupopo: Beruru inherited it and the other works from Janquetilaque after he passed away. Kupopo: On the day of our argument, Beruru and I had returned from our first journey together, as I said. But when we arrived at the sanatorium to see how Janquetilaque had fared in our absence, all that awaited us was a few of his paintings and personal belongings... Kupopo: A fell fiend had found its way into the facility a few days prior. Seeking to protect his fellow patients, Janquetilaque confronted and vanquished the beast, but the exertion proved too much... Kupopo: Beruru and I were devastated. If only we had returned sooner─taken a quicker route or not wasted as much time─Janquetilaque might still be alive. Such thoughts tormented us, kupo... Kupopo: Beruru took it hardest, for she had lost her only family. She clung to me and wept, like a child with her doll. And I, in a moment of poor judgment, said something foolish... Kupopo: I told her that she needn't depend on me so. That she could stand on her own two feet as a pictomancer─and that she should. Kupopo: She shoved me away in anger. One unkind word led to another─we shouted at each other till our throats were hoarse. When there was nothing left to say, she stormed off alone, cradling Janquetilaque's paintings in her arms. Kupopo: The rest, you know. Some time after, she journeyed to Ul'dah, sold the paintings for the funds to purchase her tomb, and then vanished. Kupopo: For so long I've been unable to understand what she was thinking, and where she might've gone. But the answer was right under our noses, kupo. Kupopo: You see, Beruru possessed such a vivid imagination that she could bring any of her thoughts to life. Kupopo: As this rare gift allowed her to not only create but reshape, Janquetilaque made her promise that she would never use her powers to alter a living being. Kupopo: But in her grief, she did just that! She made herself one with this painting! Kupopo: It's hard to believe, I know, but the painting itself tells the tale. Once, it exuded warmth and whimsy─now, it is enshrouded in a stifling pall of sorrow. Kupopo: And this brings me to my request. Using my own magicks, I want to enter the painting and save Beruru, but I don't know if I can do it alone. Can I rely upon your aid, Forename? Kupopo: I'm in your debt! Be warned: the painting will be a world where one's imagination is made manifest. That's to say, anything can happen, so see to it you are fully prepared, kupo!
Speak with Kupopo
Kupopo: All set to dive into the painting, kupo?
What will you say? > Ready when you are! > I need a moment...
Cutscene
Kupopo: Looks like we made it, kupo!
What will you say? > Where are we? > The Grand Cosmos...? But how? [requires A Grand Adventure MSQ] > It's like a waking dream...
< The Grand Cosmos...? But how? > Kupopo: Oh? Is the scenery familiar to you? Kupopo: You've been to such a place in another world!? The mere thought of it boggles the mind, kupo!
Kupopo: As I recall, Janquetilaque saw this opulent palace in a dream, and was inspired to recreate it on canvas. Kupopo: Perhaps his arcane affinity allowed him to visit worlds beyond our own in his sleep. Or perhaps someone from that world sent him the vision, kupo! Regardless, we are undoubtedly within the painting. Kupopo: Beruru must be here somewhere. Let's go, Forename!
Solo instance part 1
Kupopo: So many paintings, kupo... I have a bad feeling about this. Kupopo: Is this their idea of a welcome!? Have at them, Forename! Kupopo: You can do it, kupo! Kupopo: Those monsters...they were muses, given life by pictomancy! Kupopo: Beruru, where are you...? Kupopo: Beruru, Janquetilaque and I once encountered a griffin like that in Gyr Abania! Be careful, Forename! Kupopo: O-Oh, dear! Kupopo: Excellent work, kupo! Kupopo: Beruru... Answer me, Beruru!
Mid-instance cutscene
Kupopo: Beruru! Kupopo: It's me, Kupopo! I've come for you!
Beruru: You've come...for me? No one would do that. No one... Beruru: Master Janquetilaque is gone because of me. Because I was too late.
Kupopo: You mustn't say that, Beruru! You're not to blame!
Beruru: Even Kupopo has abandoned me. My only friend...
Kupopo: That isn't true! I'll always be your friend! No matter what! Kupopo: Please, Beruru! Please come back to me!
Phantasmal Pictomancer: She belongs to me. And you have no place here.
Kupopo: M-Master Janquetilaque!? Kupopo: No... You're just a shade born of the imagination!
Janquetilaque: That you should call me a shade, Kupopo. Such insolence cannot be borne.
Kupopo: Waaaugh!
What will you say? > The real Janquetilaque would never harm Kupopo! > We'll free Beruru from your clutches!
Janquetilaque: A pictomancer. One in possession of my soul crystal, no less... Janquetilaque: An imitation. You are no match for the master you aspire to be.
What will you say? > My imagination is my own, and it's more than a match for yours! > I'll show you what this imitation can do!
Janquetilaque: Bold words. But you will soon be made to know the true power of pictomancy! Janquetilaque: Here within my masterwork, imagination dictates reality. I shall paint the finishing touches in shades of your terror!
Solo instance part 2
Janquetilaque's Portrait: Your corpse shall serve as the highlight of my gallery! Janquetilaque's Portrait: Bloom forth, my muse, and let mind become matter! Janquetilaque's Portrait: Can you perceive the truth behind my hues!? Janquetilaque's Portrait: The shade of my arbors will grant you no solace! Janquetilaque's Portrait: Reality is mine to shape! Mountains mine to command! Janquetilaque's Portrait: No... I cannot fall to a forgery...
Post-instance cutscene
Kupopo: You did it, Forename! Your imagination triumphed over his! Kupopo: Beruru... Wake up, Beruru! Kupopo: Come on now, you stubborn fool of a Lalafell! Snap out of it!
Beruru: Kupopo...? What are you doing here?
Kupopo: We came to bring you back, kupo! We've been looking all over for you!
Beruru: I never thought that anyone would come after me in the painting... Beruru: Forename, was it? Thank you for accompanying Kupopo in his journey.
What will you say? > It's a pictomancer's duty to help others. > Why did you enter this painting?
< It's a pictomancer's duty to help others. > Beruru: Indeed... Master Janquetilaque taught me the very same, and I strove to live up to our duty. Beruru: But I couldn't save him. I couldn't save the man who raised me...
< Why did you enter this painting? > Beruru: I thought I might be able to meet Master Janquetilaque here. Beruru: He died because of me. Because I lacked the experience to anticipate what could happen...
Kupopo: It's not your fault, Beruru! Even the brightest, most imaginative minds can't predict the future, kupo.
Beruru: Why are you even here!? Trying to be nice, after everything you said! Beruru: My best friend. And you abandoned me when I needed you. Told me to make my own way...
Kupopo: You know why I said what I said, kupo... Kupopo: I'm not real. No matter how much I wish it, I can't remain by your side forever. Kupopo: Like the Janquetilaque we defeated, I'm a product of pictomancy. Your imaginary friend, and nothing more. Kupopo: It isn't uncommon for children to have imaginary friends. They create us in their minds to help cope with their struggles. Kupopo: But children grow up. And when they do, we disappear, kupo.
Beruru: You don't have to disappear, though! I painted you into being─my very first creation! Beruru: Just like I painted Master Janquetilaque. So I could fix my mistake...and so I wouldn't be alone...
Kupopo: Pictomancers can do wonderful things. By bringing our imagination to life, we bring hope to those in need, kupo. Kupopo: This, Forename learned through his/her journey. Kupopo: And so did you, Beruru. Kupopo: But no matter how harsh reality may be, a pictomancer isn't meant to paint over it, kupo! Kupopo: Rather than escape reality, we're meant to give people the courage to face it!
Beruru: But... How can I when those who matter most to me are gone?
What will you say? > If you carry on for them, they'll always be with you. > In giving hope to others, you'll find hope of your own.
< If you carry on for them, they'll always be with you. > Beruru: Carry on as pictomancer...for Master Janquetilaque and Kupopo...
< In giving hope to others, you'll find hope of your own. > Beruru: Giving hope to others as a pictomancer...
Beruru: Perhaps...perhaps I can find the strength to stand on my own. By holding them in my heart...
Kupopo: You will, kupo! You absolutely will, and you'll be just fine! Kupopo: Safe in that knowledge, I can now take my leave, kupo. Kupopo: Farewell, Forename! It was a joy to journey with you! Kupopo: Farewell, Beruru! You're my dearest friend, and you always will be!
Speak with Beruru (cutscene)
Beruru: Um, Forename? Beruru: I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused. Thank you for helping Kupopo to find and save me. Beruru: When he faded away, a warm and comforting aether flowed into my body... Beruru: The magic I had used to create him, I think. Beruru: In that instant, the moments and memories he shared with you became mine. Beruru: The shade of the Shroud, the chill of Coerthas, the brilliance of Kugane... The two of you traveled far. Beruru: I felt Kupopo's desperation as he searched for me. His yearning for our days on the road with Master Janquetilaque... Beruru: And his happiness at having found a friend in you. Beruru: But what of you, Forename? How did you find the journey?
How did you find the journey? > I enjoyed training to become a pictomancer. > Kupopo was a wonderful travel companion. > It was hard keeping up with Kupopo...
< I enjoyed training to become a pictomancer. > Beruru: I'm glad to hear that! I felt the very same when I was learning the art under Master Janquetilaque.
< Kupopo was a wonderful travel companion. Beruru: Kupopo would be glad to hear that...and I am too. It means a lot to know that someone else will remember him fondly.
< It was hard keeping up with Kupopo... > Beruru: Hee hee, I know what you mean. Kupopo was a little too carefree at times. But he meant well, and I hope you came to appreciate him as I once did.
Beruru: I saw my first moogle here, you know. The way it danced through the air, so full of life and joy... What child wouldn't have wanted a friend like that? Beruru: I could create him again. Recall the feeling and the image and paint him anew. Beruru: But I won't. Because, as the two of you taught me, parting isn't the end. Beruru: Thank you, Forename. For everything you've done for both Kupopo and me. Beruru: From here, I will set out on another journey as a pictomancer. Wherever I go, I vow to paint a path of hope as Master Janquetilaque once did─and just as you will continue to do, I'm sure!
