Minfilia is considering which of her many responsibilities demands her utmost attention.

— In-game description

Walkthrough

Main article: Primal Quests

As of Patch 2.5, completion of the Primal sidequest chain up through Feature QuestIn a Titan Spot is required to pass this point. These trials are not actually difficult and can be done blind in the Duty Finder.
In Final Fantasy XIV, the (Hard) designation simply means something is a higher-leveled version of something else. It is not an indicator of difficulty like (Extreme), (Savage), or The Minstrel's Ballad are.

Although the quests complete after attuning the aetherytes, you must clear the trials (as verified by the green checkmark at the top right) before the main scenario will unlock.

Steps

Journal

  • Minfilia is considering which of her many responsibilities demands her utmost attention.
  • Riol, who has been attempting to trace the source of some weapons wielded by disgruntled refugees, has learned of a large shipment which may be intended for the same purpose. A black marketeer in eastern Thanalan is planning to resell the weapons and reap a tidy profit─unless you and Ilberd intervene before the exchange takes place. Rendezvous with the captain of the Crystal Braves at Highbridge.
  • Ilberd informs you that the black marketeer's clients have arrived. With luck, you may prevent the sale of illicit goods, seize the men who covet them, and learn their intent.

Dialogue

Optional Dialogue

Riol: Lot o' new faces've come in from all over to join the Crystal Braves. We're glad for the help, o' course, but it's still a right pain in the arse trainin' 'em up.

Accepting the Quest (Cutscene)

Minfilia: I am most eager to address the Ascian threat. However, we dare not neglect our other pressing concerns.
Minfilia: We both know full well that Saint Shiva will not be the last primal we face...and our relationship with Ishgard is still tenuous at best.
Minfilia: To think that the resolution of the primal threat was once the sole priority of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Some days I wonder if it was wise for us to take on so many other responsibilities.
Alphinaud: Lest you forget, Antecedent, the Scions need not shoulder the burden alone. Were not the Crystal Braves established for this very reason?
Alphinaud: True, we are presented with a multitude of problems. However, we have all the resources we need to address them in turn.
Alphinaud: [Forename], in particular, is ever a steadying hand, who I trust will continue to support the Braves.
Minfilia: To what do we owe the pleasure? Have there been further developments regarding the situation in Ul'dah?
Alphinaud: As expected, the Immortal Flames have been struggling to cope with the revelation that one of their highest-ranking officers was a Garlean agent.
Alphinaud: Suffice it to say, Teledji Adeledji and his Monetarist ilk have wasted no time in attempting to turn the situation to their advantage. Coupled with ongoing unrest, the Flames are finding themselves hard-pressed.
Alphinaud: Plainly, General Raubahn needs our help, and I will direct the Crystal Braves to offer what support they can.
Alphinaud: If I am to stay abreast of the latest developments and issue effective orders, however, I cannot afford to waste time traveling back and forth.
Alphinaud: And so, for the foreseeable future, I think it would be for the best if I were to remain in Ul'dah─unless you have an objection?
Minfilia: None whatsoever. We have matters here well in hand.
Alphinaud: Moenbryda's research is proceeding as planned?
Minfilia: So she tells me, though I am not familiar with the details.
Minfilia: Urianger is poring over his tomes at the Waking Sands, and the others are contributing in their own ways.
Minfilia: Alas, the key problem─how to form an aetherial blade at will─remains unsolved. Nevertheless, it is only a matter of time.
Minfilia: [Forename], while we focus on that task, mayhap you could assist Alphinaud and his Braves with theirs?
Minfilia: It would do much to restore faith in the Immortal Flames if the Warrior of Light was seen working on their behalf.
Minfilia: Never forget that your esteemed status allows you to act in ways that those more tightly bound to organizations and nations cannot. As ever, I implore you to do so.
Alphinaud: Not that your response was ever in doubt, but I humbly thank you once more for aiding our cause.
Alphinaud: Now then, there are preparations I must attend to before my departure, such as receiving Riol's latest report.
Alphinaud: He has proven to be quite skilled at gathering information others wish kept secret, hence why I placed him under my direct command and ordered him to investigate the Ul'dahn riots.
Alphinaud: When you are finished here, join me outside. Depending on what he has to say, I may soon have a favor to ask.
Minfilia: If there are any developments on our front, I shall inform you at once in the usual fashion.

Optional Dialogue

Minfilia: While we focus on resolving the Ascian threat, pray devote your energies to assisting Alphinaud and the Crystal Braves.
Alphinaud: Is everything in order, [Forename]? Are you ready to attend us?
Tataru: Hello, [Forename]! Are you sleeping well? You must be absolutely exhausted from saving the realm on a daily basis!
F'lhaminn: Ever since Moenbryda arrived, the Rising Stones has been buzzing with excited energy. I must admit, her enthusiasm is rather contagious.
Higiri: I am undamiliar with the dishes to the lands of the north. Perhaps once Moenbryda has concluded her current research, she might deign to share with me her culinary knowledge.
Papalymo: Moenbryda has charged us with acquiring some rather esoteric manuscripts, but I'm afriad the task is proving to be nigh impossible...
Y'shtola: When the city of learning was abandoned, a great many tomes were scattered and lost. How smoothly our research might proceed were we able to pursue the archives of yesteryear.
Yda: We needed a rare ore to modify the white auracite, and Thancred solved the problem using only his linkpearl. I mean, it's great and everything, but where's the fun in that...?
Thancred: When one is in need of precious commodities, it helps to have friends in the right places. Fortunately, I am well acquainted with the charming daughter of a successful Ul'dahn import merchant.
Hoary Boulder: We were but stripling adventurers the night we saw fire rain from the sky and a pillar of light scorch the heavens. What a sight that was, eh, Coultenet?
Coultenet: Hoary and I were is eastern Thanalan when the colossal shards of Dalamud pierced the ground. We stood witness to the subsequent explosion of aether, and watched dumbfounded as the swirling energy solidified into those twisted crystal structures that we now know so well.
Moenbryda: These two have been telling me stories about the corrupted crystal formations that appeared following the Calamity. I'll need more data before I can draw a conclusion, but I'm intrigued by the potential of their untapped energies.

Speaking with Riol (Cutscene)

Riol: Pleasure as always, [Forename]. You'll be escortin' the commander to Ul'dah, I take it?
Alphinaud: Actually, I had another task in mind for him/her.
Alphinaud: If you would be so kind as to repeat your report for his/her benefit?
Riol: Right, then.
Riol: Me an' mine've been makin' inquiries into the source o' the weapons what found their ways into refugee hands a ways back.
Riol: So happens we caught wind o' somethin' promisin': a rather large purchase o' sharp an' pointy things by a black marketeer holed up near Highbridge.
Alphinaud: I doubt that this man would have secured such a quantity of weapons if he did not already have clients waiting─clients that, for whatever reason, would prefer for this transaction to remain secret.
Riol: Brings to mind that merchant what caught an arrow while talkin' to [Forename], don't it? Generous fellow, he was, dolin' out swords an' spears to the downtrodden an' disgruntled.
Riol: Which isn't to say that these clients have the same mischief in mind...but if ye want to be sure, might be prudent to intervene before they collect their goods, savvy?
Alphinaud: Seizing the weapons before they fall into the wrong hands would be for the best. However, if we strike at the appointed hour, we might capture the black marketeer as well as his clients. What say you, [Forename]?
Alphinaud: Then it is settled. Rendezvous with Captain Ilberd at Highbridge and intervene when the exchange takes place.
Alphinaud: Now then, if you would excuse me, I must leave for Ul'dah. I expect good tidings.

Optional Dialogue

Riol: Don't keep Captain Ilberd waitin' for ye too long, mate/lass. He might have to start without ye!

Speaking with Ilberd at Highbridge

Ilberd: Ah, [Forename]. My scouts have been keeping a close eye on the black marketeer, and it would seem that his guests have arrived.
Ilberd: It would also seem that he has hired more than a few men to stand guard─common thugs of no consequence, but they nevertheless pose a threat.
Ilberd: Even so, I feel compelled to apologize. This is far beneath a man/woman of your standing, and Commander Leveilleur needn't have dispatched you hither...
Ilberd: But powerful men ever have need of loyal, able-bodied friends. Having found one in you, 'tis only natural that he would come to rely upon you without hesitation.
