Steps

Journal

  • The Prima Vista has left port, bound for the Dalmasca Estersands. Await the call to disembark in the comfort of the tiring room.
  • You save Jenomis, but not before a band of bangaa led by the infamous Ba'Gamnan steal both the Duma and the principal's journal.
  • Wit and cunning (or else strength and magicks) have seen you through the Royal City of Rabanastre. Return to the Prima Vista's tiring room and prepare for the voyage back to Kugane.
  • Jenomis's misadventure in the Estersands has only made him more determined to uncover the truth behind the Zodiac Brave Story and prove the existence of Ivalice. Additional evidence is apparently to be found in Durai Papers -- a secret document passed down through countless generations of the Lexentale family... which is actually the Durai family. The tome, however, is written in High Ivalician, the secrets of translating which were lost along with Jenomis's stolen journal. As it will take some time for the principal and his family to recover from the theft, they have invited you to return to your adventures, with the promise that they will send for you if any additional assistance is required. Perhaps now would be an opportune moment to ask Lina Mewrilah for her thoughts on the story so far.
  • Lina seems enamored with the grand adventure on which you have both embarked, and promises she will notify you the very moment there are any new developments.

Dialogue

Optional

Lina Mewrilah: I'll admit that I have my doubts regarding this second hero theory, but if even a fraction of it proves true, it could be the story of the century!
Alma bas Lexentale: You will find my father. I just know it.

Accepting the Quest (Cutscene)

Ramza bas Lexentale: Dalmasca is nestled in a forgotten corner of the Empire's outermost territories. I do not foresee any trouble from the standing army, but would suggest committing to memory the locations of each of the barge's exits...just in case.
Ramza bas Lexentale: As for the flight itself, the currents above Dalmasca are as wild as the land below. You may want to hold on.
Ramza bas Lexentale: We'll complete our descent to Rabanastre in the shuttle.
Alma bas Lexentale: Ramza!
Ramza bas Lexentale: I thought I made myself clear, Alma. The capital is simply too dangerous. Father would never forgive me if I were to lose you trying to rescue him.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Come. We are wasting time.

Cutscene

Ramza bas Lexentale: According to my father, Rabanastre was already a thriving city some thousand years ago.
Ramza bas Lexentale: But after performing several private excavations beneath the so-called Desert Sapphire, my father came to the conclusion that it was not the first settlement to stand here.
Lina Mewrilah: Then...your father believes that Rabanastre sits atop the Royal City of Lesalia, capital of Ivalice!
Lina Mewrilah: But if that's true, it could change history! We would be famous!
Ramza bas Lexentale: “Famous”? Are you sure you don't mean rich? Pah! Your kind are all alike.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Parasites grown fat on the sweat and suffering of others.
Lina Mewrilah: Bold words for a boy of but sixteen summers.
Lina Mewrilah: And what, pray tell, have I done to deserve such spite? I only wish to learn the truth behind the disappearance of the Empire's foremost playwright. If that should lead to something bigger, well then, I would be the worst reporter in the realm if I did not pursue it!
Ramza bas Lexentale: Yes, yes. We can argue about this now, or we can return to the Prima Vista and report to our army of adventurers that it is time to begin the expedition. I humbly suggest the latter.
???: You see? It is as I said, Brother. Let them come to us!
???: Should we kill them now?
???: No. The time is not right.
???: When has that stopped us before?
???: Fool! Do you see that one? Slayer of gods, they call [her/him]. Warrior of Light!

Optional

Lina Mewrilah: You cannot expect me to walk away from this! If the legend of Ivalice is true, the public has a right to know!
Ramza bas Lexentale: To Rabanastre!
Alma bas Lexentale: Hold on, Father... Help is on its way...

Entering the Royal City of Rabanastre

Duty Dialogue

Ramza bas Lexentale: Before us lies the Royal City. My father is somewhere inside. I can feel it.
Ramza bas Lexentale: These are no ordinary birds!
Ramza bas Lexentale: Something foul prevents our crossing. Ware its numbing breath!
Mateus the Corrupt: You do not fear me!? You will!
Mateus the Corrupt: Rise dark water, and grant me stregnth!
Mateus the Corrupt: Goddess of ice, be my blade!
Mateus the Corrupt: Living shield, protect me from evil!
Mateus the Corrupt: Freeze, dark waters! Steel my body! Steel my resolve!
Mateus the Corrupt: Let the ichor flow. Let it birth the mire that will drown mine enemies!
Mateus the Corrupt: Fools! You have not...yet seen...the limit of my reach...
Ramza bas Lexentale: Cid was not mistaken in his assessment of your skill in battle. Still, I worry that something even more sinister awaits us ahead.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Seeq bandits! It appears the deplorable creatures are here to raid abandoned homes.
Ramza bas Lexentale: My father mentioned the Empire using their might to put down rebellions within the city, but this destruction is too widespread. What if that creature we fought earlier...
Ramza bas Lexentale: Another of the twisted "others"! This is not the work of the Empire. Something is wrong here.
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Without order, creation is doomed to descend into chaos. I bring that order. You will kneel.
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: To maintain order, one must first have control.
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Come! the cleansing flame will seal all wounds!
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: The land seeks order. It will not suffer the chaos you peddle. Nor will I!
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Why do you resist!?
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Resistance will be met with retribution! The landy shall bury your screams!
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: To defy order is to defy creation itself!
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Come! The cleansing flame will seal all wounds!
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Even the laws of life itself are mine to bend! Rise sand! Rise stone! Heed my bidding!
Hashmal, Bringer of Order: Your order...is a lie...
Ramza bas Lexentale: Again, you have proven your worth to this expedition. Let us see what lies beneath the city.
Ramza bas Lexentale: More bandits...despite all the creatures we've encountered? I know not whether they are brave or foolish.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Welcome to the Garamsythe Waterway. These tunnels are said to have existed since before even the Kingdom of Dalmasca was born. As the city grows, channels are widened, and new outlets dug. I would venture that some of the pools are so deep, no one alive has ever seen their bottoms.
Ramza bas Lexentale: These ruins... We are no longer in Rabanastre, my friends. This is Lesalia. The Lesalia of Ivalician legend!
Ramza bas Lexentale: The creatures here are not mere beasts of voidsent. the secrets that lie beyond must be ones worth keeping.
Rofocale: Hark! What army marches on Rofocale's demesne?
Rofocale: Ill fortune befall all who dare gaze upon me!
Rofocale: An inescapable hell awaits you all!
Rofocale: I walk the shadows. You will not see me until my lance has transfixed you very soul!
Rofocale: Sound the battle horns! Soldiers, to me!
Rofocale: The heavens tremble in my wake!
Rofocale: The auracite! Gaze upon its undying brilliance and know true fear!
Rofocale: Hah hah hah hah! Even a hound knows when to turn tail! Would you have us think you less than chattel!?
Rofocale: Writhe in the land's embrace!
Rofocale: Without light, there can be only darkness!
Rofocale: Born of darkness, born of night. Come forth, my children!
Rofocale: The tip of my lance is already at your necks. Submit, or die.
Rofocale: The light! It blinds!
Rofocale: Ah... To die a good death...
Ramza bas Lexentale: Any doubts I had of your participation in this rescue I have no longer. I was wrong to place mistrust in Cid and my sister's judgment. Now let us continue on. I sense we are close to our goal.
Ramza bas Lexentale: The air here feels... wrong. Can't you sense it? Death awaits us in yon chamber.

Cutscene

Argath Thadalfus: Why dares disturb the slumber of Argath Thadalfus, rightful king of Ivalice?
Argath Thadalfus: Descendants of House Beoulve? Then by my sword shall I banish your souls to the deepest hell!

Duty Dialogue

Argath Thadalfus: It is to be a fight, then? I am only too happy to oblige!
Argath Thadalfus: Like sheep before the wolf!
Argath Thadalfus: You will be judged!
Argath Thadalfus: Kneel and repent!
Argath Thadalfus: Crawl forth from the shadows, my pet!
Argath Thadalfus: You are but blood to stain the circle!
Argath Thadalfus: Does it grieve you to see the depths of your own weakness laid bare? Maggots...
Argath Thadalfus: You do not belong in my world. Step into Nothing!
Argath Thadalfus: Pah! You have yet to witness the auracite's true might!
Argath Thadalfus: I am the lies upon which you sup!
Argath Thadalfus: You will be judged!
Argath Thadalfus: The world has no place for such wretches. Your claim to life is forfeit!
Argath Thadalfus: You are but blood to stain the circle!
Argath Thadalfus: I am Revelation!
Argath Thadalfus: The gods have no eyes for chattle!
Argath Thadalfus: Fool is the dog who bares his teeth before his master!
Argath Thadalfus: Like sheep before the wolf!

Post—battle Cutscene

???: Where...Where am I? This body...it is not my own. Oh gods, what have I done? Save me Ramza! Save me!

Post—Duty Cutscene

Jenomis cen Lexentale: Where... Where am I?
Ramza bas Lexentale: Father!
Jenomis cen Lexentale: Ramza... And...the Warrior of Light? Yes, I know of you. But that you should come to my rescue...? Words...fail me. A poor playwright I must seem...
Ba'Gamnan: The term you're looking for is “thank you”! Upon which note─I, Ba'Gamnan, bounty hunter, do humbly thank you, Warrior of Light, for delivering me this fine gift!
Ba'Gamnan: Now hand over the auracite, unless you wish to see the desert sands turn red! And be quick. Gijuk here does not have the steadiest of hands.
Ba'Gamnan: That one! She will bring it to me.
Ba'Gamnan: Yes! This is it! The Duma!
???: And to think we found it so close to Doma! The Duma of Doma! Bwah hah hah hah!
Ba'Gamnan: Enough, Bwagi! We would not have our guests think us underbred.
Ramza bas Lexentale: You have what you want, you thieving lizards! Now unhand him!
Ba'Gamnan: Of course. A Bangaa is always true to his word. I will be keeping this, though.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Father!
Ba'Gamnan: You've only yourselves to blame for this. But if you mislike the thought, you could always blame the gods. Not that they are listening! Bwah hah hah hah hah!
Ba'Gamnan: Get up, fool! We're leaving!
Ramza bas Lexentale: You're going to be all right.
Lina Mewrilah: We cannot see to your father's hurts here. Come on! We must get him back to the Prima Vista.

Player7 Icon.png Cutscene end.

Optional

Jenomis cen Lexentale: <groan>
Alma bas Lexentale: Father! Wake up, Father! Please, Mother─don't take him from us yet!
Ramza bas Lexentale: He is unchanged.
Company Musician: No song can express the gratitude I feel towards you for bringing the principal home...but a song you shall have nonetheless!
Company Assistant: (Psst! Listen. What if Jenomis isn't truly unconscious at all? What if he is feigning his deathlike torpor to demonstrate his mastery of the craft? Well? Well?)
Company Muscle: When I think about the principal lying there...the muscle in my heart aches.
Company Tragedian: You have my thanks for aiding young Ramza in the principal's rescue. The entire company—nay, the entire world is in your debt.
Company Thespian: The others tell me you risked your life to save Jenomis—a Garlean citizen. Perhaps your view of us "imperials" is less simplistic than I had assumed...
Company Dancer: One, two, three! One, two three!
Hm? Now is the not the time to be practicing, what with the principal unconscious? Nonsense! Now is the perfect time to practice. I want this performance to be flawless by the time her comes to.
Company Belle: Words cannot express my gratitude for the part you played in the principal's rescue. Ramza insists that he will make a full recovery. Though...after what happened to his mother, Tia, what else could he say...
Wandering Dramaturge: Allow me a moment to deviate from my normal routine and thank you personally for rescuing my dear friend Jenomis: thank you.
Company Tragedienne: Tell me the principal will be all right. If he were to... <sob>... I can't even bring myself to think what would happen if... if...

Speaking with Lina in the tiring room

Lina Mewrilah: Jenomis remains deep in slumber, but his breathing is steady and his fever has subsided. For now, all we can do is wait. I've sent word to Cid. I hope you don't mind...

Cutscene

Jenomis cen Lexentale: Alma, Ramza. Can you ever forgive me?
Jenomis cen Lexentale: And you, Cid. It was never my intention to put you to such trouble... I am ever in your debt.
Cid: You would have done the same for me, Jenomis. Besides, it was [Forename] here who went to all the trouble. If anyone deserves your thanks, it's [her/him].
Jenomis cen Lexentale: He is right. I have done naught to deserve your kindness, yet I am its beneficiary nonetheless.
Cid: ...So, if I understand correctly, you're saying auracite does not work to facilitate the possession of a living host by an eikon, as was assumed to be the case with Ysayle and the archbishop...
Cid: ...but rather absorbs the host's aether─its very soul─and somehow transforms it before returning it to the host's body.
Cid: If that is the case, our Sharlayan allies will need to be informed immediately.
Cid: But I suppose the real question here is...did you find what you came looking for?
Jenomis cen Lexentale: The legend would have us believe that Delita Heiral─the commoner who would be king─was the sole hero of the Zodiac Brave Story, but as I have discovered, there was another. Two others, in fact...
Jenomis cen Lexentale: ...Siblings whose roles faded from subsequent retellings of the story. A brother and sister by the names of Ramza and Alma.
Cid: Then...
Lina Mewrilah: To prepare for this assignment, I pored over every published work on Ivalician legend I could lay my hands on, and nowhere did I find any mention of these siblings.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: But I did. I uncovered irrefutable evidence that Delita had a close companion named Ramza who aided him in his rise to power. This in turn led me to Alma. And that I might never lose sight of the truth, I named my own children after these lost players.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: I'm sorry I never told you any of this, Cid, but you must believe me. Ivalice has never been a mere pastime of mine. It is and forever will be my calling. My purpose.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: My family's purpose.
Cid: Go on...
Jenomis cen Lexentale: The world knows me as Jenomis cen Lexentale, yet that is but my stage name. My true name is Arazlam. Arazlam Durai.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: Countless generations past, it was my ancestor who penned the Durai Papers─an account of Ivalice and the War of the Lions that details what truly occurred during that turbulent era.
Ramza bas Lexentale: You are tired, Father. Rest. I will continue.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Long ago, an orphan by the name of Orran Durai crossed paths with both Ramza and Delita. After Delita's rise to power, Orran found himself in the service of the pauper-become-king.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Following the War of the Lions, Orran believed the people of Ivalice had a right to know the truth of Ramza's involvement, and set about documenting his deeds. When the church learned of his intent, however, they branded him a heretic, and had him burned at the stake.
Ramza bas Lexentale: The Durai Papers were never published, and any existing copies were gathered and sealed away in church vaults─the truth about Ivalice along with them.
Lina Mewrilah: What was so damning that it would drive the church to do such a thing?
Ramza bas Lexentale: The answer to that question can be found in this book─the only surviving transcript of my ancestor's chronicle, copied from an early draft and passed down for untold generations.
Ramza bas Lexentale: With this, my father and I plan to reveal the truth and restore honor to my family name.
Cid: Forbidden chronicles? A secret family legacy? Not that I doubt you, Jenomis, but how do you expect to convince people of all of this when well-nigh every soul in the realm believes Ivalice to be nothing but a bedtime story?
Jenomis cen Lexentale: By proving that it is anything but.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: And when people see that Ivalice was real, the rest will fall into place.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Were it as simple as bringing forth the chronicle and submitting it for review, we would of course have done so long ago. But, alas, it is not. The Durai Papers, you see, are written in High Ivalician─an ancient tongue long extinct.
Ramza bas Lexentale: My father, his father, and his father before him labored tirelessly to decipher this tome, but for want of other sources made only fitful progress. A word here, a phrase there. It wasn't until a recent expedition to Rabanastre turned up several well-preserved artifacts that we were able to translate a small portion of the papers.
Lina Mewrilah: Then the diary stolen by the Bangaa bounty hunters─
Jenomis cen Lexentale: I'm afraid so. Everything we had learned of the language was contained in those pages.
Lina Mewrilah: Then we're back to where we started.
Ramza bas Lexentale: Not necessarily. We still have the transcript, as well as some few translated passages. And, of course, my father's impeccable memory.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: I have come too far to allow so simple a setback to deter me from my purpose. I will show the world the truth if it is the last thing I do!
Alma bas Lexentale: (It is as Master Garlond said... He is a man obsessed, and I fear Ivalice's grip on him will only grow tighter...)
Alma bas Lexentale: (Father was fortunate to escape Rabanastre with his life, and already he speaks of continuing his quest? Promise me you'll keep him safe. Please...)

Optional

Ramza bas Lexentale: My father and I will begin the retranslation forthright. Once we have made sufficient progress, you will be informed.
Alma bas Lexentale: I don't believe I properly thanked you for saving my father. I shudder to think what would have become of him without your help. Now, I simply worry how long this reunion will last...
Jenomis cen Lexentale: Cid tells me it was you and your companions who liberated Ala Mhigo. I am honored that one of your acclaim would lend [her/his] strength to my cause.
Company Musician: You are wondering how a theater can operate with a mere skeleton crew, are you not? The answer is simple. We are not so few as we seem.
Company Musician: Many keep to their cabins out of fear that here, beyond the borders of the Empire, they will be shunned, harassed, or even assaulted for the crime of being Garlean.
Company Musician: I hope you will not be offended by this. You must understand, the Empire is rife with rumors of how foreign savages kill all Garleans on sight, and devour their third eyes in the hope of gaining mystical powers. Silly, I know, but frightening, nonetheless.
Company Assistant: The principal always says that writing a play is one part inspiration, two parts application...and thirty–nine parts confounding expectation. I'm not entirely sure what he means, but I'm certain it's profound.
Company Muscle: I fear I may have underestimated you, adventurer. The kindness in your heart shines like moonlight on oiled skin.
Company Tragedian: The Majestic Theater Company would be naught without its principal. In saving one man's life, you have saved the livelihoods of many more.
Company Dancer: One, two, three! One, two, three!
Now that the principal is awake, I mean to dance more vigorously than ever. I would leave him in no doubt as to my readiness to perform!
Company Belle: Thank you again for bringing the principal home. It has been many winters since we lost Tia, but the pain of her passing is yet fresh in our hearts. To lose Jenomis as well would have been too much to bear.
Company Tragedienne: Wonderful! I cannot think of a better or more fitting end to this act!... Though I suppose it would have been a little better if you had thought to prevent those Bangaa from making off with the principal's journal. But let us not dwell on minor details. Bravo, [Forename], bravo!

Speaking with Lina outside the airship landing

Lina Mewrilah: After what I've seen here, I'm all but convinced that Ivalice exists...at least in some form.
Lina Mewrilah: The problem will be gathering sufficient evidence to convince the thousands of scholars and historians who have based their careers on the presumption that it doesn't.
Lina Mewrilah: Not that I've ever been one to shy from a challenge, especially when it means the story of the century!
Lina Mewrilah: If you're in, [Forename], then I'm in. If you're not in...well, I'm still in. Either way, you'll be hearing from me again soon. That much I promise you!

Optional

Alma bas Lexentale: After hearing the account of your descent into Dalmasca, I couldn't help but wonder what other horrors lurk in the Estersands.
Alma bas Lexentale: My brother made me swear an oath I'd not breathe a word of this, but he and Father believe that deep within the ruins of Rabanastre dwell creatures bound by Divine Magicks older than the Royal City itself.
Alma bas Lexentale: I cannot help but wonder... Were they imprisoned there to protect us against them, or to protect whatever lies below against us?
Alma bas Lexentale: Nothing I can say will free Ramza and my father from the curse that is our family's legacy, but I fear the worst should they continue to pursue the legend...
Ramza bas Lexentale: We are currently attempting to retranslate passages of the Durai Papers from memory -- focusing on the sections that mention the Duma—but the going is slow without my father's journal.
Ramza bas Lexentale: I will see those filthy bangaa's heads on pikes before this is over... But first, the translation. Someone will send word once we have something of substance. Good day.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: Ah, the liberator. If even half of what Cid told me is true, your exploits would translate well to the stage. Perhaps, when my life's work is done, and the secrets of Ivalice have been laid bare, I shall consider penning a new play.
Jenomis cen Lexentale: Alas, that day may be long in the coming...through each hour brings with it a new discovery... <sigh>
Company Musician: My heart is filled with excitement at the prospect of working once again with Principal Jenomis. And it is all thanks to you...an outsider, of all people.
Company Musician: Perhaps now the minds of some of our more timid actors will be put at ease, and they will show themselves, that we may perform for the good people of Hingashi.
Company Assistant: (Psst! Listen. What if this whole episode was merely an elaborate ruse staged by the master himself, Jenomis cen Lexentale, to recruit you, liberator of West and East, to our humble troupe? Well? Well?)
Company Tragedienne: As traveling performers, we are wont to take our freedom for granted. But many living under the ivory standard do not enjoy the same privilege, whatever the Empire would have you believe.
Company Tragedienne: In truth, a dark cloud hangs over the hearts of Garleans everywhere, and until they, too, are granted true freedom, it is we who must bring light into their lives, if only even a little.
Company Thespian: I would be lying if I said I was comfortable accepting the aid of a [woman/man] responsible for toppling two provincial governments. Many of my countrymen were exiled back to the Lifestream by you and yours merely for following orders which they were not in a position to disobey.
Company Thespian: I understand the plight of the Doman and Ala Mhigan peoples, but I cannot help thinking there must have been another way to resolve things. A way less steeped in blood and suffering.
Company Thespian: The Garlean Empire I was raised to love was never about tearing down and conquering, but about embracing and accepting. Think of what we could achieve if we were all brothers and sisters. If we were all family.
Company Thespian: While the end may not always justify the means, I stand by my belief that the Empire's goal is a noble one.
Company Thespian: I made a promise to Jenomis when I joined this troupe that I would strive to understand the feelings of outsiders such as yourself. Let us just say, I am still at work on this... but that I am not so quick to judge as once I was.
Company Dancer: One, two, three! One, two, three!
Having all but perfected my previous routine, my heart craved a new challenge, and a new challenge I have found—a slow, yet elegant dance popular amongst the geiko of Hingashi.
Company Belle: Leave it to famed liberator to liberate the Majestic Theater Company from the gloom that had enveloped us all in the principal's absence. Why, even Ramza seems grateful—or, at the very least, less ungrateful.
Company Belle: Of course, Ramza is only the way he is because Jenomis is too engrossed in his work to pay his son the attention a son deserves. You cannot expect a bow to show kindness if he was never shown any himself. How Alma turned out so well, I'll never—
Company Belle: Ah! You heard none of this. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the principal, both as an artist and a father!
